Memorial Gates mark the entrance to Wellington Park at 251 Wellington Main St, Wellington, in Prince Edward County. The gates were dedicated on 1 July 1930 and rededicated in 2010.
On either side of the park entrance, a curved bench joins the central and outer pillars of field stone capped with concrete. Atop each central pillar are three bronze rifles holding a helmet. A plaque in the left pillar marks Wellington post 160 of the Canadian Legion (British Empire Service League), 1930. The plaque in the right pillar was replaced in 1986, marking WW1, WW2 and the Korean War.
According to a 2014 Bay of Quinte Doors Open brochure, the gates were unveiled by County-born* Lt-Gen Sir George N Cory. Brig-Gen BR Anderson, also in attendance, is quoted as saying, “We must never pass these gates without thinking of those who fell for the sake of humanity.”
Welcome to several new followers! Thank you for joining the journey. I look forward to your comments.
*Other sources say Cory was born in Illinois or Halifax.
